Radicals 03.25 – 04.01.15

Radicals

Is it really that radical to call for social justice? Karamu House turns 100 this year, and in his recent conference keynote, Artistic Director Terrence Spivey asked, “Where are the radicals today? Artists are special people.” Of course, Terrence and his colleagues are the radical, special ones, presenting The Mighty Scarabs through the weekend.

Producer, choreographer, director and designer Jill Chetter is another one, producing Red Satin Cabaret at The 9’s Alex Theatre. Tailspinner mashes up Robin Hood, Snow White, and Shakespeare. The folks at Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed host a theatre/ game/ improv/ workshop to examine and overturn oppression this week in Akron. Radicals? Are you kidding? Crack the window and breathe some fresh air.

We share our close-up with President Obama and local luminaries, we preview BWBeatles doing Abbey Road live, we attend a rehearsal for Case’s Illuminated spring dance concert, and we clue you into Coit Road Farmers Market’s annual French Toast Breakfast fundraiser.

There’s a discussion on GMOs in your food, a benefit for feral cats in the alley, and a multi-day art & music hackathon in Lakewood. Mansfield comments on Obama’s visit, dangerous emails, stupid frat boys and thug life, then suggests, “Lock ’em up! (just don’t throw away the key).” Radical? Anything but. –Thomas Mulready

There’s a reason federal judges are appointed for life: It’s the only way to keep them immune from public pressure. Of course some will say the practice takes accountability out of the hands of the governed, but others counter the trade-off is worth it…

* Lock ‘Em Up! (Just Don’t Throw Away the Key): Republicans in the Ohio Legislature have proposed tougher new laws to get violent felons off the street, but Senate Bill 97 probably is in need of some tweaking…

* Thug Life: Eighteen-year-old Brandon Jones was a thug; his grieving mother admitted as much and his being shot twice in as many years proves it. Now Brandon Jones is a dead thug, shot and killed by a cop as he was exiting a convenience store he had broken into at 2 am to steal whatever he could get his hands on…

* Hung by the Tongue: Our modern means of communications — the Internet with its emails, and cell phones which facilitate text messaging and instant videos — that were rightly credited with the success of the Arab Spring (the wave of revolutionary demonstrations, protests, riots, and civil wars that rocked the Arab world beginning in December of 2010) is also playing a role in forcing America to come to grips with the subject many in this country would like to keep on the taboo list…

* He Came, He Saw, He Had Fun: On yet another stop of his victory lap around the country, President Obama came to Cleveland and had a great time. He deserves the warm welcome he received if for no other reason than he has survived…

* Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining: The continuing uproar over the video depicting a group of University of Oklahoma students, all members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity, singing a racist song about not allowing black students to join their organization is, in a counterintuitive way, good for America. And here’s why…
