Outdoor Season Starts @NUFarmersMarket

NorthUnion

Sat 4/4 @ 8AM-noon

Sat 4/11 @ 9AM-1PM

When a small group of people committed to boosting local food started the North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square in 1995, there was no local food scene to speak of. The idea of sourcing food from farmers in your backyard was just starting to be talking about.

Now, 20 years later, North Union runs two year-round markets — at Shaker Square and Crocker Park — along with eight smaller summertime markets. And since then, farmers markets have burgeoned throughout the region.

Since North Union kicked off the farmers market trend in the Cleveland area, it’s fitting that it also kicks off the farm market season when the Shaker Square and Crocker Park market move back outdoor from their indoor winter locations. That’s when more farmers and food producers from throughout northeast Ohio return with the produce, meats, dairy, bakery, honey and other products area regular market customers have come to know and love, and more fresh vegetables and flowers appear each week.

The Shaker Square Market starts things off on Sat 4/4 with the annual sheep shearing and blessing, always a big favorite with the kids. There’ll be a raffle for a $100 food basket, live music and a chef demo and sampling.

Crocker Park opens the following week, Sat 4/11. The other North Union markets open in June.

Now you know spring is really here!
