Juliana Hatfield Three Returns From the ’90s to Play @MusicBoxCle

Juliana

Fri 3/6 @ 8PM

Juliana Hatfield was one of the “it” girls of late ’80s/early ’90s alterative rock. First surfacing as a member of the Blake Babies, she established that diffident, wispy, little-girl vocal delivery and attitude, set against noisy, often punk-based music, that became standard-issue by the mid ’90s. She also projected a personal style that rejected the previously standard postures for “women in rock.” She was anti-showmanship, withdrawn, tense and neurotic, all of which connected with the era’s zeitgeist.

By the mid 90s, with her own Juliana Hatfield Three and several minor radio hits including “My Sister” and “Universal Heartbeat,” she became something of an icon for the alternative/college rock scene. By the late ’90s she was out of the major label system that sucked up so many ’90 indie rockers, but she continued to make music steadily, more or less in obscurity and supported by a core cadre of fans.

It was pretty big news last year when she reformed the Juliana Hatfield 3 and began work on a new album, which has just been released. On the heels of that album Whatever, My Love, the Juliana Hatfield Three is on the road. They’ll be at the Music Box Supper Club with Cleveland pop-rockers These Knees opening.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door.
