There’s a popular myth that’s been in circulation for years that children reject their parents’ values and swing in the opposite direction.

Instead it seems more common for children to follow in their parents’ footsteps. Such is the case with Frida Berrigan, who has recently published a book called It Runs in the Family: On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing Into Rebellious Motherhood.

Frida’s parents are former nun Elizabeth McAlister and the late Jesuit priest Philip Berrigan. Her father became well known for his arrests on behalf of his anti-Vietnam War activism. And together they founded a Baltimore community called Jonah House, which is still active, to serve as a space to grow nonviolent peace activism. Frida was carrying signs at rallies almost as soon as she could walk.

This acorn didn’t fall far from the tree. She’s been active in a variety of peace-related organizations including the War Resisters League and was a co-founder of Witness Against Torture, dedicated to closing Guantánamo and ending torture. She  also writes for the blog Waging Nonviolence. She now has two toddlers and is busy nurturing the next generation of non-violent anti-war activists.

Frida Berrigan will be speaking at Trinity Cathedral and signing copies of her book following her talk. All are welcome and the event is free. Attendees are also invited to attend the short choral evensong service at 6pm followed by a community supper ($5 donation)
