GMO discussion

Just a few years ago, most people had never heard of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) or genetically modified crops, although they’ve been infiltrating farms and fields for a couple of decades. They involve tinkering with the genetic material of the plant to produce crops that are more productive, more resistant to pests or more resistant to large doses of herbicides used to control weeds.

Now, thanks to activist groups campaigning for bans on farming them in some areas and putting GMO labeling issues on ballots in several states, people are becoming more aware of them. While the big industrial food complex insists they are safe, the vast amount of money poured into defeating labeling issues in California, Colorado and Oregon, where it just barely failed last November, has made some people suspicious, especially since they are labeled in other parts of the world, such as Europe, and banned in China. Many people reasonably ask, “Even if they ARE safe, shouldn’t we be able to know what we’re eating?” Big Food says no way.

That’s why it’s so admirable that Townhall in Ohio City has been working on its totally non-GMO menu virtually since it opened nearly two years ago. It’s a complicated process which Townhall finally achieved earlier this year, with the help of people like the Non-GMO Project.

Want to learn more? Townhall is hosting a series of Monday night discussions about GMOs and why you might want to consider keeping them off your plate. The discussion is free to attend, and it’s vegan night at Townhall, so you might want to come hungry and order one of its many tasty plant-based dishes. It’s the first of a three-part series, co-sponsored by the Mustard Seed Market.
