Back-Up Singer Lynn Mabry Comes to @TriCEdu for Film Screening, Discussion

Microphone

Thu 3/19 @ 7PM

Lynn Mabry is one of those names you don’t know but whose voices you have surely heard. Virtually every big-name pop act and many rock acts have augmented their sound with backup singers, and for decades, Mabry was one of those essential but anonymous voices.

In the ’70s she toured with P-Funk and became ones of the Brides of Funkenstein as part of the Parliament-Funkadelic stable of bands. That gave her a reputation and a springboard to work with acts like the Talking Heads, Stevie Nicks, Bette Midler and George Michael.

Mabry will be at the Black Box Theatre at the Tri-C Center for Creative Arts for a screening of the 2013 film 20 Feet From Stardom about hard-working backup singers such as herself, hosted by Tri-C JazzFest director Terri Pontremoli. Following the film Mabry will talk with Rock Hall vice president of education and public programs Lauren Onkey about her career in music.

It’s free.
