Tenor Lawrence Brownlee has come a long way from his upbringing in Youngstown, singing gospel and later performing at Cedar Point.

His decision to attend Indiana University, with its highly respected music program, was a crucial step in launching his international singing career. He made in Metropolitan Opera debut in 2007, singing what’s become one of his signature roles, Count Almaviva in Rossini’s comic opera The Barber of Seville.

Since then, he’s sung the role all over the world, and made something of a specialty of Rossini as well, singing important roles in several of his other opera. When he comes to Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall under the auspices of the Tuesday Musical Association, he’ll sing a program that shows he has a much wider range, including music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Marx, Franz Liszt, Alberto Ginastera, Ben Moore and, in a nod to his roots, arrangements of spirituals by Damien Sneed. Don’t be too surprised if he maybe sneaks a Rossini aria in there too.

He’ll be accompanied by pianist Kevin Murphy.

Tickets are $25-$55
