Dirty Dozen Brass Band Livens Up @KentStage

DirtyDozen

Wed 2/18 @ 8PM

Nowadays it seems like New Orleans is bursting with brass bands, old and new, young and old, traditional and modern. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band pre-dates most of today’s crop, having formed in 1977 and, like most, updating the traditional sound with an infusion of the contemporary. The band spent most of its early years acquiring a dedicated fan base in its home town but began hitting the European festival circuit and U.S. jazz clubs in the mid ’80s.

By the turn of the millennium, interest in New Orleans culture had grown and the Dirty Dozen led a parade of brass bands inspired by their rock- and funk-influenced update. They’ve recorded and/or toured with young musicians in a variety of genres including Modest Mouse, Norah Jones and the Black Crowes.

And in 2006, they rerecorded Marvin Gaye’s classic 1971 album What’s Going On featuring rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy on a sober and angry version of the title track, a commentary on Hurricane Katrina the previous year.

The group will perform at the Kent Stage. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door.
