Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman Beamed to Local Movie Theaters @MetOpera Live in HD

"Les Contes d'Hoffmann"

Sat 1/31 @ 12:55PM

Wed 2/4 @ 6:30PM

Jacques Offenbach’s 1881 opera The Tales of Hoffman (Les Contes d’Hoffman in his native French) is based on three short stories by early 19th-century German fantasy/horror writer E.T.A. Hoffman. Naturally a lot of magical, mystical and downright strange things happen in the opera, which casts Hoffman himself as the lead character.

In the Metopolitan Opera’s latest mounting of the work, tenor Vittorio Grigolo sings Hoffman, while sopranos Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley and Christine Rice are the three women who in reality are the three facets of Hoffman’s fantasy woman. Baritone Thomas Hampson completes the cast as the shadowy Four Villains.

The opera will be broadcast live to movie theaters across the country as part of the Met Live in HD series, with a rebroadcast the following Wednesday. Tickets are $23.
