Get Ready to Garden By Swapping Seeds at Lakewood’s @CoffeeProper

SeedSwapsSat 1/31 @ 2-4PM

The Cleveland food movement is growing so rapidly it seems like there’s a new step being taken every growing season. Recently we started to hear a lot more about seed saving and seed swapping, where farmers and growers save seed from some of their best plants and trade with others to share different varieties.

The Cleveland Seed Bank is one organization that promotes this activity in the area (although not the only one!), officially launched just two years ago. In honor of National Seed Swap day, it’s holding its annual seed swap at Coffee Proper in Lakewood.

All are welcome to stop in, bring whatever seeds they’ve saved or just come to talk to fellow growers about how to get started. Bring seeds, roots, rhizones and tubers and new this year, sourdough starters, cheese and yogurt cultures, kefir grains and kombucha scoby. And if you’re new, don’t worry about coming empty-handed; there will be seeds for everyone.

“Everyone will leave with seeds, new garden friends and renewed enthusiasm for seed saving!” they promise.

There’ll also be a screening of the 30-minute documentary Seeds of Freedom, which talks about the efforts of farmers around the world to take control of their own means of production—the seed.

It’s free.
