Ohio Sky has been one of Scene’s “Bands to Watch” three times now, and you know what they say about a watched kettle never boils! Luckily, this pot has finally boiled, releasing its first new work in almost three years, a follow-up to its 2012 EP This House Is Old and Full of Ghosts.

The Big Distraction will officially debut at a show at the House of Blues. Anyone who has seen the band perform around town—which they do several times a year, usually at special concert events like Roar Along the Shore, NEO Cycle, the Cellar Door Rendezvous and most recently opening for Mr. Gnome at their annual holiday homecoming show at the Beachland—won’t be surprised by what they hear.

In more than eight years together, the band has changed personnel, evolved its distinctive sound and built up a reputation as a powerful live act, its towering stoner rock sound alternately overpowering and ethereal—sometimes at the same time. The Big Distraction accurately reflects the band’s layered, hypnotic sonics, ably crafted by founding members vocalist/guitarist Vince DeFranco and drummer Eric Bambic, along with bassist Michael Bashur and keyboard player Pat Finegan. The nine-track album moves relentlessly over a rushing landscape of sound with lulls here and there to let you catch your breath until it detonates in the final track “Vulture Cascade.” Hopefully the momentum in this finely crafted music will be matched by momentum in the band’s career. Cleveland has watched them long enough; it’s time other eyes and ears were on them.

Two other local bands, Nights and EYE, will open the CD release show at the House of Blues. Tickets are $12.
