Cleveland’s Kiss Me Deadly—guitarist/vocalist/ songwriter Jen Poland, bassist Evan Lieberman, and drummer Madelyn Hayes—play music that evokes the early New Wave era with its subtle delicacy laced with a hard edge. The group lays down basic rock instrumentation, which it augments with other instruments such as keyboards, mandolin and bouzouki as the mood strikes them. They released their first album What You Do in the Dark last November.
They’re returning to an off-the-beaten-path venue they seem to enjoy: Becky’s Bar & Grill downtown, where they’d headline what they’re calling a “Back to School” concert, marking the start of the semester at nearby Cleveland State University.
