Celebrate the creative nature of art with Case Western Reserve University! The Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) is calling out to artists, designers and scientists for original work and is now accepting submissions for the Art of STEM: Celebrating the Creativity of Science exhibition and competition. The deadline to submit images from research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to KSL’s Art of STEM contest has been extended to Sun 2/15. All entries must be received by 11:59 PM to qualify. 

Art of STEM challenges Case Western Reserve University faculty, students and staff to capture or visually communicate the beauty inherent to scientific enterprise and research investigation in the form of a digital image. The competition is also open to Cleveland Institute of Art students who collaborate with a member of the Case Western Reserve community, as well as any student in grades 9-12 who currently attends public, private or home school in Cuyahoga County.

The Art of STEM event will not only be a competition, but also an exhibition of selected work. Chosen images will be printed and showcased at the Kelvin Smith Library Art Gallery and other areas throughout the library during March of 2015.

So what are applicants encourage to submit for entry in the competition? 1) Images created by machines in a lab 2) Computer-generated or digitally enhanced scientific images 3) Science-related hand drawn images 4) Photographic images of nature, scientific phenomena or people at work on a science-related project 5) Any other type of STEM-related image presented as art.

A jury of Case Western Reserve faculty and area based art professionals will select the winning entries. The judging will be based on an evaluation of artistic merit, title creativity, aesthetics and description clarity. Get creative and go at it hard, because there are cash prizes to be had! 1st place wins $350, 2nd place: $200 and 3rd place: $100. Two awards of $50 will be awarded to high school student winners as well.
