Opera per Tutti Becomes Cleveland Opera Theater in Time for ‘Amahl & the Night Visitors’

Amahl

Sat 12/20 @ 7PM

Sun 12/21 @ 2PM

Just last week, Cleveland’s Opera per Tutti, which performs at various venues around the city as part of its mission to bring opera to a new audience, disappeared — but not really. The group has had a name change to Cleveland Opera Theater, just in time for its production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s beloved 1951 Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors.

It’s the perfect opera for beginners. It’s only one act, it’s in English and it has an appealing and easily relatable storyline about an encounter of the three kings on their way to see the newborn Jesus, encountering a crippled child who wants to go with them. With a child as the center character and a scenario they can easily grasp, it’s an especially great way to introduce children to opera.

Cleveland Opera Theater will do two performances: Saturday at Cleveland Public Theatre’s Parish Hall, Sunday at University Circle United Methodist Church. Both performances are free; donations will be solicited at each for charity: on Saturday for City Mission, on Sunday for Dream Days.
