Guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott Remembered @ClevelandAgora

Fri 1/2 @ 6PM

The heavy metal world was rocked with shock and grief on hearing of the horrific shooting of guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott onstage at Columbus’ Alrosa Villa rock club in December 2004.

Abbott had long since left an indelible impact on that world as the co-founder of the incalculably influential Pantera. He co-founded the band with his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, in 1981 and they went on to influence pretty much every heavy band of the ’90s following their 1990 breakout album Cowboys From Hell.

After Pantera broke up in 2003, the brothers formed Damageplan, which released its debut album in 2004 and hit the road — with eventual dire consequences. For unknown reasons, a heavily armed man killed Abbott and three other people before being killed by a police officer in an incident that still reverberates. The photo above shows the side door of the Alrosa covered with fan tributes.

With little Pantera DNA in virtually every heavy rock band formed since the early ’90s, a memorial concert dedicated to Dimebag is a sure crowd pleaser. The show at the Agora Ballroom will be headlined by Pantera tribute band Vulgar Display of Pantera. They’ll be joined by Kriadaz, Custom Audio Mutation and Flames Burn Black.

Tickets are only $6, but you can snag a free ticket at clevelandagora.com.
