Disengage & Friends Shake the Rafters @GrogShop

Sat 12/27 @ 9PM

Disengage rocked northeast Ohio’s heavy underground scene hard in the mid-late ’90s. These sweethearts of the old Grog Shop — the funky little joint at the corner of Mayfield and Coventry with the bathrooms you didn’t want to use — were a product of their time, with hard, dark music that a grungey undertow.

They released three albums — 1997’s Teeth, Heart and Tail on Cleveland’s 2000’s Obsessions Become Phobias on Man’s Ruin Records run by Bay area artist Frank Kozik, and 2004’s Application for an Afterlife. By the late 2009, vocalist Jason Byers had moved to Brooklyn where he’s focused on his art (he recently had a show at the Hedge Gallery at the 78th Street Studios) and plays with his new band Black Black Black.

But the boys will be reliving old times for one night at the new Grog Shop, where the bathrooms are serviceable and not scary.

They’ll be joined by Fuck You Pay Me, the latest project of legendary punk rocker Tony Erba, who said he is going to die at this show, but we doubt it. We’re guessing Erba will live to get in your face many more days. Columbus heavy rockers Lo-Pan are also on the bill.

Admission is $10.
