Gospel/jazz/blues/R&B singer Sydney Ellis has had an interesting journey. Born in West Virginia, she grew up and raised her family in Cleveland. But she didn’t launch her musical career until 24 years ago when she was already 44 and living in Los Angeles.
She quickly made up for lost time, developing an active touring and recording career. Now a 67-year-old great-grandmother, she’s based in Germany and performs all over the world, drawing from the repertoire and songbooks of artists like Koko Taylor, Duke Ellington, Willie Dixon, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Lou Rawls, Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong and George Gershwin.
She’s coming back home to Cleveland this weekend to perform at the Music Box Supper Club.
Tickets are $7, which includes a free specialty cocktail. Doors open for dinner at 6pm; showtime is 8.
