Mahall’s 20 Lanes in Lakewood is a living piece of regional history. Its two modest sets of bowling alleys, upstairs and down, are still in the style of the ’50s when bowling was all the rage and every neighborhood had a bowling establishment hangout. But Mahall’s goes even further back — 90 years to be exact.
It was pretty much running out of steam when new owners bought it three years ago and revived the place with a new menu, a stage in the game room as well as downstairs in the locker room, and a full schedule of both local and out-of-town indie artists in a variety of genres, as well as special programming ranging from freeform jam sessions to poetry readings to lectures. It’s now one of the hippest spots on the west side. And of course, you can still bowl.
And they’re throwing a party to celebrate the place’s 90th birthday. It will feature ’60s-style menu items like fried fish, mac & cheese and soup at ’60 s prices (’20s prices was going a bit too far apparently), served from 6pm until midnight.
There’ll be open bowling all day from noon until midnight. In a clean break from the old-school past the experimental Trepanning Trio will play two 40-minute sets starting at 7pm. And they’re promising that Santa will be hanging around from 6-8pm. He’s a busy boy these days.
