Get that little girl of your acquaintance dressed up in her velvet dress and shine up her patent leather shoes. It’s time for The Nutcracker!
This traditional holiday ballet, with its snowflakes and sugarplum fairies and festive family Christmas party, is a favorite of little girls everywhere. It’s almost as much fun to see them prancing through the lobby dressed in their finery as it is to watch the performance.
Different companies come to Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare each year to present the ballet with its familiar and much-loved Tchaikovsky score, since Cleveland no longer has a resident ballet company.
This year’s production should be truly special. Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet will be dancing at the State Theatre to music provided by the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Tito Muñoz; the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus will be participating as well. And as usual, local ballet students will be performing as party guests, mice and other roles so you’ll see plenty of beaming parents in the crowd too.
