Fri 11/28 @ 7:30 & 9:30 PM

University of Akron professor/director of jazz studies Jack Schantz has performed with traditional jazz ensembles like the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He was the artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, which keeps traditional orchestra-style jazz alive, from 1992-2009. He still performs with the ensemble.

For the last 17 years, he’s also led the Jack Schantz Quartet, which takes a fresh look at tradition gospel tunes, spirituals and church hymns and uses them to as a base upon which to build jazz compositions. The quartet, which also includes pianist Theron Brown, bassist Mike Forfia, and drummer Mickey Eritano, will perform two sets at Blu Jazz in Akron.

Admission is $10.
