The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the nominees for the class of 2015, with the winners to be announced in December. And next year, the induction ceremony returns to Cleveland on April 18.

That would be the perfect occasion to induct nominee Nine Inch Nails aka Trent Reznor (pictured), the western Pennsylvania native who launched NIN from Cleveland. He’s undeniably one of the more deserving nominees on the list if influence is truly a factor. He took aggressive industrial metal, added some pop elements, and  moved it out of its niche into the mainstream. By the mid ’90s, the rock scene was littered with angsty one-man groups who combined angular electric guitar with jagged synthesizer sounds.

The other name on the list that ought to be a shoo-in is German synth band Kraftwerk, who laid down some of the groundwork that Reznor — and every other artist working in electronic music including all of today’s EDM acts — built upon. They’re one of those acts whose influence was far bigger than their popularity which is why they might not get in.

The other acts nominated include the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Green Day, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, the Marvelettes, N.W.A., Lou Reed (already inducted with the Velvet Underground), the Smiths, the Spinners, Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughan, War, and Bill Withers.

Seriously? Bill Withers?
