Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill has the type of voice often described as “dark,” so it’s no surprise she’s sung a lot of Wagner. She can handle lighter moments though, of which there are many in Hector Berlioz’s song cycle Les Nuits d’été.

That’s the piece she’ll be singing when she makes her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra this week. She’ll be appearing at the Thursday and Saturday evening and Friday morning concerts. The orchestra will also play Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 (“Rhenish”) at all three concerts.

At the evening concerts, the audience will also get to hear the first-ever Cleveland Orchestra performances of Toshio Hosokawa’s 2012 composition Meditation, dedicated to the victims of the 2011 tsunami in his native Japan. Rising young conductor Robin Ticciati leads the orchestra.

Tickets are $29-$149.
