Change of plans! Acclaimed Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn was scheduled to perform a pair of Bach concertos with the Cleveland Orchestra this weekend as part of the orchestra’s two-week “Focus on Bach” series. Alas, on her doctor’s advice, she has cancelled the appearances as well as some others (Nothing serious — the 34-year-old violinist strained a muscle).
So the concertos are out, although the other two pieces on the program — Brahms’ Schicksalsleid and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 (“Reformation”) — will be played as planned. And there will still be some Bach. Soprano Yulia Van Doren was booked on short notice to join the orchestra on what the orchestra notes call “one of Bach’s most interesting and animated cantatas,” his Cantata No. 199. James Gaffigan conducts.
Tickets are $29-$149.

That’s a very misleading headline! They didn’t “drop” her – she cancelled due to medical reasons.

Just an editorial question? Isn’t the “Schicksalsleid” a choral work by Brahms? I believe it is a Brahms work, not a work by Bach. Please check and amend if necessary on the program.

Schicksalslied, not Schicksasleid. Good for Yulia!
