Accordionist Walt Mahovlich and his band Harmonia have been playing a mix of eastern European folk music, including gypsy music, for a long time, and Mahovlich has been a champion of music from this part of the world for even longer. Harmonia has played their share of ethnic concerts, but they’ve also played venues like Nighttown and Mahall’s to share their music with new listeners who might now have roots in the Balkans.
Now Mahovlich and his crew — violinist Jozef Janis, bassist Ken Javor, and cimbalom player Alexander Fedoriouk — are returning to play upscale environment of the Tremont cocktail lounge the Velvet Tango Room. Yes, they’ll play some tango music. The music’s free, which gives you more to spend on VTR’s admittedly pricy cocktails — all made from scratch with fresh ingredients when ordered and worth every penny. They are for savoring not guzzling.
