French composer Georges Bizet’s 1875 Carmen is one of the most flamboyant, sensual and melodramatic operas in the popular repertoire, containing at least one aria everybody knows, the one popularly known as “The Toreador Song.”
In the latest production from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, which will be beamed to movie theaters across the country as part of its Met Live in HD series, Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili will sing the role of the doomed gypsy title temptress, which she performed at Milan’s La Scala Theatre in 2009 as her first leading role. A pair of Russians sing the two corners of her fatal love triangle, the lovesick soldier Don José (Aleksandrs Antonenko) and the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo (Ildar Abdrazakov).
It screens at theaters all over Northeast Ohio. Tickets are $24. Go here for theater locations and to order tickets.
