Fri 10/31 @ 10PM
Pittsburgh’s Wine & Spirit formed casually in a dorm room at Slippery Rock University in 2006 as an acoustic duo. But the ensemble didn’t really start making a splash until 2010 when they took their hard-hitting bluesy rock out on the backroads of western Pennsylvania. Releasing their album Against All Odds in 2013 gave them a little more momentum. What’s interesting about them is how much of that Pittsburgh blue-collar DNA they retain from ’70s/’80s predecessors like the Iron City Houserockers and Norm Nardini & the Tigers while not sounding like something out of a time capsule.
The group will be playing at the Happy Dog, with newish Cleveland band Moon Rock, who also put a little blues in their sound, and Lowly, the Tree Ghost, an elegantly lyrical folk-rock ensemble who don’t get as much attention in the local scene as they probably deserve. The evening will be a little less raggedly indie and a little more mainstream than most nights at the Happy Dog, but it’s well worth catching this late show if you don’t have to get up Saturday morning.
Admission is $5.
