Domestic violence is notoriously tricky. Since the victims have a close relationship with their abuser — and often one that’s sometimes loving — they can get trapped in a virtually inescapable cycle of manipulation.

Laura Cowan was involved in a particularly horrific situation with a man she lived with in California, who held her and her children prisoner through threats, intimidation and beatings. He’s now serving seven life terms in prison for the abuse he heaped on her, two other women, and their children. And she moved back to her native Cleveland where she’s now helping other women in abusive situations through her nonprofit Laura Cowan Foundation.

She’ll MC the Jam Against Domestic Violence at the Beachland Ballroom featuring a whole bunch of Cleveland’s best blues talent. The Vernon Jones Blues Cartel (pictured) is the host band. Joining them will be Maurice Moss Stanley, Hope Moore, Jarred Goldweber, Butch Armstrong, Barbara Barrett, Tracy Marie, LaGirlZ, Bob Frank, Luther Trammel, Sandra Bass, the Brent Lane Band and the Skip Werke Band.

Admission is $10 and proceeds will benefit the Laura Cowan Foundation.
