Alt-Country Pioneers the Jayhawks Play @KentStage

Jayhawks

Fri 10/31 @ 8PM

The Jayhawks came out of a Minneapolis scene in the mid ’80s dominated by influential post punk bands like the Replacements and Husker Du and took a different course, becoming one of the cornerstones of the not yet fully emerged alternative country/roots rock movement.

Originally singers/songwriters Mark Olsen and Gary Louris provided the material that set the tone for the band as they recorded their two best-known albums 1992’s Hollywood Town Hall and 1995’s Tomorrow the Green Grass. When Olsen left in 1995 to pursue his own muse in an even more rustic direction, the Jayhawks followed fellow alt-country band Wilco’s path out of folk/country/roots music into a more adventurous and eclectic direction.

After a lengthy hiatus in the mid ’00s, the group returned in 2009 with a new album and some reunion shows with Olsen. They recently reissued a trio of their older albums — 1997’s Sound of Lies, 2000s Smile and 2003’s Rainy Day Music — and have been doing some serious touring. They’ll be at the Kent Stage with young rootsy rock singer/songwriter Trapper Schoepp and his band the Shades.

Tickets are $30.
