When the silent film Phantom of the Opera came out in 1925 — more than two decades before Andrew Lloyd Webber was even born and long before the famous crashing chandelier — it was a huge hit with audiences and became one of the most famous roles of Lon Chaney Sr. who played the Phantom in ghoulish makeup of his own design. Original moviegoers were said to have screamed and fainted when he unmasks in the film.

You can judge for yourself how scary it is when the movie screens at Severance Hall, as the first of this year’s Cleveland Orchestra at the Movies series. However, it won’t be the orchestra providing the music but acclaimed Cleveland-based organist Todd Wilson playing the hall’s Severance Memorial Organ, giving the film some creepy musical cache.

Tickets are $30-$95.
