The Cleveland Classical Guitar Society opens its season with its annual free showcase, which shines the spotlight on world-class talent under our own noses. The concert will feature three players: Jason Vieaux, Francois Fowler, and Robert Gruca.

Vieaux is well known to area classical guitar fans from his years teaching at the Cleveland Institute of Music, performing in the area, and promoting local classical guitar events. He’s released 13 CDs, including Play earlier this year. Currently he splits his time between CIM and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and runs an online guitar school as well.

Robert Gruca, who studied with Vieaux at CIM, has performed on tour with the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as solo and with flurist Linda White in the Gruca White ensemble, while teaching at the Cleveland Music Settlement.

Francois Fowler (pictured) teaches at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, and performs widely. He’s a composer as well as a skilled guitarist.

It will be a diverse evening of music. Vieaux will perform a program of mostly contemporary Spanish and Latin music by Pat Metheny, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Francisco Tárrega, and José Luis Merlin. Gruca will perform baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Loeillet’s Suite No. 1. And Fowler will perform a set of his own compositions so you’ll get a taste of both sides of him.

The program takes place at Plymouth Church UCC in Shaker Heights.
