Celebrate 22 Year Anniversary @GrogShop

Sat 9/13 @ 9PM

When the Grog Shop opened near the corner of Mayfield and Coventry roads in 1992, in the space formerly occupied by the low-key saloon, it was the beginning of the grunge/indie rock era. And the Grog Shop, along with the Euclid Tavern, became Cleveland’s headquarters for that scene.

Times changed and a little more than a decade later, the funky little club where you probably didn’t want to risk going into the ramshackle bathrooms, moved up the street to a former Arabica space that was larger, more centrally located on the street, air conditioned and had industrial-grade bathrooms that could be hosed down. The music has grown to include a lot of hip hop and emo-style music that appeals that appeals to a younger crowd. It’s really stayed in the game.

So now it’s celebrating its 22nd (!) anniversary with a free party hosted by the three local classic R&B/garage rock DJ fanatics who call themselves the Secret Soul Club. They’ll spin some of their favorite tunes, while two bands relatively new to the Cleveland scene, garage/surf ensemble Shale Satans and Matt Rolin’s Nowhere, whose music harks back to classic late ’60 psychedelia, will play live.
