Case Study Shows Lakewood Project’s Long-Term Benefits

Music education for the win… A new study from Case Western Reserve University finds that the Lakewood Project, Lakewood High School’s student rock orchestra, fosters long-term musical involvement and has helped prepare students “to achieve in ways that came as a surprise.”

Follow-up interviews and surveys conducted with Lakewood Project alum, who range in age from 18 to 28, were filled with glowing reflections. Besides from gaining musical benefits, alum reported:

  • Learning how to communicate and work through group frustrations to resolve complex challenges.
  • And being comfortable in leadership positions—a skill developed when called on to manage the orchestra.
