Ashtabula Wine Country

Ashta

A lot of people don’t think of northeast Ohio the same way they think of California’s Sonoma and Napa valleys as prime wine country — but they should.

Travel east of Cleveland and you’ll encounter acres upon acres of vineyards in Lake and Ashtabula Counties. Many of these wineries include restaurants with expansive verandas, allowing you to sit out in the country and sip from your glass while watching the sunset. Other wineries are more simple mom-and-pop operations where you can speak to the people in charge.

Aside from wineries, Ashtabula County is the covered bridge capitol of the world, with 16 new and historic covered bridges dotted throughout the county and an annual covered bridge festival to celebrate them. Ashtabula Harbor is a mix of small-town quaintness, lake industry and scenic viewpoints. And in the summertime, Geneva-on-the-Lake offers a taste of low-key, low-cost summers of the past, with its strip of biker bars, arcade games, miniature golf, go-karts, souvenir shops, cottages, motels, weekly flea market, and the retro Eddy’s Grill.
