Gordon Square/Detroit Shoreway

Gordon Square Arts District – the stage is set: a declining neighborhood undergoes a dramatic transformation and becomes an entire district built around and for the arts.

Cleveland Public Theater was the pioneer more than two decades ago, but now the old Capitol movie theater has been restored, a multimillion-dollar facility has been built for the Near West Theatre, and the 78th Street Studios has become a go-to destination. The result is an array of new restaurants, owned and run by both celebrated area chefs and immigrants offering outstanding versions of their native food in this melting pot neighborhood.

Entrepreneurs have been drawn here too, to sell small-press books, vinyl records, one-of-a-kind clothes and old-fashioned ice cream sundaes. And housing developments such as Battery Park have brought new residents to join the old in this neighborhood where tradition and trendiness blend.
