It seems like every rock artist out there, no matter how trivial, has a lobby to get them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Illinois power pop heroes Cheap Trick probably have as good a case as any.
Since releasing their self-titled opening salvo in 1977, the distinctive band has produced a vast catalogue of albums and classic tunes like “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “Dream Police.”
Colin Gawel of Columbus power pop band Watershed has put together a Cheap Trick tribute show he’s calling “Why Isn’t Cheap Trick in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?” And he’s performing it at the Beachland Tavern on the night that the Rock Hall inductions take place in Los Angeles.
“To draw attention to this injustice, we plan on performing every year on the night of the induction ceremony until Cheap Trick gets the call,” he says. “For everybody’s sake, let’s hope this is our first and last show. I mean, Cheap Trick makes it look easy; surely we will prove otherwise.”
He and his band the Lonely Bones will be joined by Sky Dragster, a quartet of Clevelanders who were in such local 90s bands as Paranoid Lovesick and Medicine Show.
Unlike the Rock Hall inductions, the Beachland show is free.
