A Tribute to Ruby Fox

Ruby Fox

Fri 5/21 @ 7:30PM

Wake Up & Live! pays homage to local playwright Robert “Ruby” Fox [pictured] w/ an evening of PlayActs performances. On Fri 5/21 @ 7:30PM, witness a showcase of new plays, new actors, new directors, and new playwrights–all in celebration of Fox. That’s kinda awesome.

The scoop:

Highlights of the evening feature two original works by Fox: Celibacy Odyssey, A one-act comedy performed off-Broadway, and a pivotal Wednesdays with Hilda scene depicting the Jewish and black experience in 1965. Both works will be directed by Dahna Fox, Ruby’s widow, who previously directed the full-length Wednesdays with Hilda. Both plays, along with many others by Fox, initially received staged readings and performances by Wake Up And Live’s Actors’ Studio.

New Playwrights-in-Residence, Michael Laurenty and Tom Raber will see their one-acts directed by Sapphire DeFranco, actor, making her directorial debut, and by Gary Webster, Playwright-in-Residence. Sailing, and Two Words, both by Michael Laurenty will be directed by DeFranco, and If I Arrive Before I Leave, by Tom Raber will be directed by Webster who wrote TV Divas and Rate a Date. Webster will also direct and perform in Rate A Date, while Sue Johnson directs the TV Divas who are now in a Hollywood coffee shop awaiting news from Shonda Rhimes, mega-Producer, about a movie deal.

In addition to the theatrical pieces, “PlayActs” Performances will entertain the audience with poetry by Shaylawnda Davis, vocals by Gina Kish Pilotti and Mariama Whyte, and the Rainey Institute Dance Ensemble.
