Local Proud

Our annual guide to local festivals is the most popular thing we do each year. Why? Maybe because it’s the best of our local neighborhoods and artists coming together to celebrate.

And we’re so proud when these things grow, expand and pop up everywhere. Third Fridays at 78th Street Studios is so huge, the artists there came up with a new idea, on a new night. Watch It Wednesdays allows visitors to get up close with working artists, to share their craft, and make new friends.

Akron’s 90.3 The Summit and sister station 330.net are recognized as the best around: local, relevant and plugged in to the network. They’re hosting their 3rd annual 330 Day Concert at the Akron Civic Theatre, another local gem.

Local artist entrepreneur Althea Jones hasn’t given up on her neighborhood or the building she calls the Black House Gallery, inviting artists to create art, shoot photos, and tag it with graffiti art. CoolCleveland correspondent Nicole Hennessy got the story, and the images that you’ll have to see to believe.

Area kids can EGGSperiment at GLSC, or eat pancakes at Akron’s Lock 3. The Rock Hall’s induction ceremony is gearing up, and the Schwartz Brothers are back at their old stomping grounds, Hoopple’s in the Flats. We’ve got video of the new curator for the Syndicate For the New Arts, and we’ve got more local events every day of the week than you’ve got time for. Makes you proud. –Thomas Mulready

It’s almost time again! Summer festival season, that is. And given that it seems like the season is never as long as we’d like it to be, you might want to start your planning now. That’s what our summer festival guide is for.

Kicking off in late April and going strong until October, there are food festivals and music festivals, ethnic festivals and arts festivals, neighborhood fests and sports fests. There’s even a festival dedicated to pet skunks! Jot that old favorite down in your calendar and resolve to try something new this year.

SPONSORED: ONLY @ OBERLIN Span six centuries in one breathtaking evening of music with the Brentano String Quartet! The groundbreaking ensemble reimagines Renaissance-era madrigals by Gesualdo and Monteverdi, plus Stephen Hartke’s modern set of madrigals The Fifth Book and Shostakovich’s dip into serialism, the String Quartet No. 12. Tickets: $35; students $10. Fri. 3/30.

78th Street Studios‘ Third Fridays are as much a social event as an art event, and they only offer the chance to view art anyway. Now a group of artists with studios in the building have come up with a new concept called Watch It Wednesdays, where artists tote their work to a common area and visitors can watch them as they work.

“It’s an opportunity to see something up close, ask questions, see their materials and tools,” says Susie Frazier, one of the artist/organizers. “You see the little things they do, the tricks of the trade. We feel deep down that everyone on the earth is creative – they just need a little trigger. This encourages them to feel creative themselves.” Wed 4/4.

Radio is changing. Old-school terrestrial radio churning out the same hits all day is dead, as listeners can choose from an infinite variety of music on digital streams. And creative digital channels such as Akron’s TheSummit and 330.net compete by going hyper-local.

For the 3rd year, they’re hosting their 330 Day concert where nearly three dozen area artists will perform an acoustic version of one song each. Check out this astonishing array of talent at the Akron Civic Theatre. Fri 3/30.

The east side of Cleveland is full of crumbling houses stripped to the bones, waiting on demolition. But the Black House is something different. It’s a monument to the spontaneous creativity that the city exudes.

Painter Althea Jones is the proprietor of this kaleidoscopically colorful house gallery located on a block riddled with vacant, abandoned homes. There she hosts shows, teaches classes to local kids and lets artists paint on every wall and surface. Writer/photographer Nicole Hennessy visits and brings back a report and photos.

Within four days in March, three major companies – iHeart Media, Claire’s and Toys R Us – declared bankruptcy. Our career columnist Alex Sukhoy has worked with all three in her two-decade career in Corporate America. “Just like that, twenty years of my career became obsolete,” she says.

That caused her to reflect on some of the themes and ideas she’s been hearing from friends, clients, fellow biz owners, former MBA students and industry leaders. She shares some of these thoughts with us.

Last year the Parrot Head Run made its debut, launched by four Valley Forge High School alumni in honor of a friend and fellow Parrot Head (a Jimmy Buffett fan) who passed away due to mental illness. It raised nearly $12,000 for Fostering Hope, an organization that promotes mental health.

This year’s run takes place on Sat 7/14 when they hope to double the number of runners from last year, when they had 750. You can pre-register for $30 through Sat 3/31 after which regular registration is $35. And with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville now open in the Flats East Bank, that turned out to be the perfect location for the run!

Originally founded as a performing ensemble, the Syndicate for the New Arts has grown into something larger than itself. Since partnering with St. John’s Ohio City, it began curating a concert series of contemporary classical, new music, modern jazz and more. This series now changes hands to new curator, Jackson Studzinski, with even more ambitious 2018 concert schedule.

Looking ahead to their performance on Tue 4/10, CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska met up with Studzinski at St. John’s to talk about the new directions he is taking the organization. Taking advantage of the large historic space, Studzinski includes more multimedia performances and more of a commitment to programming local and Rust Belt artists.

Many elected officials will continue to whistle past the graveyard. They are so firmly in the pocket of the gun lobby they don’t know how to extricate themselves. But their days are numbered, even if they don’t care to acknowledge the fact…
