A Seat at the Table

12.12-12.19.12
A Seat at the Table

Are we welcoming the next generation to sit at the table where decisions are made? Are they invited to sit on the board, not just the advisory committee? Do we listen when young people stand up to talk, or do we politely ask them to sit down and wait their turn?

Read Richey Piiparinen’s commentary and let’s see if we can do better. Then you might enjoy Joe Baur’s commentary on whether a national chain in Downtown is a milestone. Or just another taco shop. While you’re at it, Bert Stratton gets serious for a change and offers a personal angle on the PD’s predicament. And Mansfield comments on the difference between the facts and the truth.

But don’t stop there. Join the Maker Nation at the Screw Factory for their open studio, or Windsong, Cle’s feminist chorus, for a good sing, or The Tour of Good Cheer appreciation party. Or the Tremont BrewHaHa or the Bad Racket 4X4 release show, or the Engage Cleveland holiday social. Get it all on your mobile app for your ‘Droid or iPhone, and save us a seat. –Thomas Mulready

Changing Cleveland with Music

Freelance violinist Ariel Clayton knows firsthand the power and magic that can come from having a musical instrument in your hand.

Today, the area music teacher is hoping to give underprivileged youngsters the same opportunity she had with the brand-new musCLE House initiative, which aims to provide students with a one-hour music lesson in exchange for one hour of philanthropic involvement or community service…

I was at a talk the other day in Oberlin discussing the renewed interest in Rust Belt culture, particularly as it relates to economic recovery. There was a student from Scranton, PA, who talked about his passion for the Rust Belt, and his desire to make a difference upon returning home.

He asked — and I am paraphrasing — what does local government need to do to enable the next generation to help with post-industrial revitalization?

I responded: by not disabling the next generation’s ideas to aid in post-industrial revitalization…

The next “Urban Park” should be made by taking the four, unfortunately divided, squares on Public Square, and making them one again.
