Abstract

Sometimes we’re a bit obtuse, I guess. So, let’s clear a few things up: Cool Cleveland uncovers, reveals, champions, spotlights and celebrates all the cool stuff and people of our region. That’s it, no Hollywood movies, no touring blockbusters and no celebrity gossip that seems to have infiltrated just about all the other media. What does that mean this week? We’ve got features on farmers markets, a boomerang throwdown, and preview of an abstract art exhibition. We link you to stories on bike sharing, a summit for kids, and how Cle leads the nation in manufacturing growth.

For each of the next 7 days, we curate, by hand, just the coolest of things going on in all parts of our region. Mansfield talks straight about how upstanding black leaders have been snookered, and we excerpt comments from our writers and readers. We post the Top 5 most clicked links from last week’s issue. Our partners run Sponsored Links to their own cool events and programs, and our readers click on them. It’s all pretty straightforward, don’t you think? –Thomas Mulready

For years Cleveland art gallery director Robert Maschke has been after his friend, architect and artist Michael Benjamin, to transform his sketches into larger pieces. Finally Benjamin acquiesced with the results being his first gallery exhibition, What Remains, which will be on display Fri 8/20 through Fri 9/24 at Detroit Avenue’s 1point618gallery.

“The title of the exhibition comes about based on these glimmering images in the distance and kind of what’s left of what you don’t see all the time,” Maschke said. “He’s trying to capture that in his pieces. I think it’s very complex and it contradicts itself. So the interest of the pieces is not the same for everybody. I think you’re going to see different things from different people when you look at these pieces… Read more from John Benson here

For many of us, receiving a boomerang as a kid was tantamount to finally getting a guitar but having no idea how to play it. Eventually both items became a decorative conversation piece. End of story? Maybe not, as far as the boomerang is concerned.

For nearly 30 years Cleveland Boomerang School owner Dave Boehm has been staging clinics around Northeast Ohio in hopes of edifying and intriguing the public on that curved piece of wood most often associated with Australian Aboriginals and kangaroo hunting. This leads us to the next series of events, a Boomerang practice on Sat 8/21 at Howe Meadow in Peninsula and then Boomerang Extravaganza on Sun 8/22 at the same venue.

“Basically it’s to educate people about the boomerang and give them the chance to fly boomerangs,” said Detroit, Michigan native and Madison resident Boehm. “I lived and worked in Australia in the early 70s, and upon returning stateside I would be in the parks flying the boomerang and people would say to me, ‘I never saw one of those work…'” Read more from John Benson here

A pair of Cleveland black leaders got snookered, played like a couple of six-string guitars, by a clever West Sixth Street nightclub owner. Joseph Carey, the white owner of “Lust,” a popular gangster rap hangout in the Warehouse District convinced George Forbes and Rev. E.T. Caviness that racism was the reason police were leaning on his black clientele.

The two upstanding members of the black community rushed into federal court with Carey to prevent the club from being shut down, and, their involvement helped to carry the day for the club owner. The only problem is, the police, in this case, were reacting to thuggish behavior, not skin color.

The end result makes it appear that these two pillars of the black community (as well as the black community itself) condone such behavior, which is not the case.

The 99 percent of blacks who simply want to go out and have a good time on the weekend abhor negative, ghetto-ish behavior as much as anyone else, and indeed, we’re oftentimes embarrassed by such acting out…

* COMMENT: What Does It Mean To Lose Your Church? I was a member of St. Peter for 10 years and agree with most of the above sentiments. It was a different kind of parish, with life, energy, dignity, inclusion, love and outstanding preaching and liturgy. When I moved to Indianapolis five years ago, I looked high and low for a new “St. Peter’s.” Alas, there wasn’t one here, just the boring, bland ho-hum mass where people went because they had to. After a few years of that, I decided I just could not go through the motions anymore… Read the comment from John Russell here
