Ensemble Theatre’s “Jelly Bean” Looks at the Tough Choices of Urban Life

Fri 2/9-Sun 2/25

The play Jelly Belly, written by Ohio University professor of playwriting Charles Smith, debuted at Chicago’s legendary Victory Gardens Theater in 1989. But its story about drugs and drug-dealing in the inner city, and the no-win situations that lead someone to get involved with them, still resonate today. The title character is a drug dealer who tries to lure another man who has gone straight with the promise of big money in the drug business.

Ensemble Theatre in Cleveland Heights, which has previously produced four of Smith’s plays, is mounting Jelly Belly as its next production. It runs Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 2pm through Sun 2/25. Tickets are $12-$25
