Sampling

Although we’re working hard throughout the week to assemble the e-blast you’re perusing, you need to know that our writers, editors, photogs and video makers are curating only a sample of the many cool things available in our region in a given week.

We’re pleased to introduce you to Mourning [A] BLKstar, a collective of musicians who use sampling to create an indescribable music. View the video and catch them at Now That’s Class this weekend. Keep an eye on how your tax money is being spent by attending the Cuyahoga Arts & Culture’s board meeting this week at Idea Center and see what the controversy is all about.

Now that convergence-continuum has raised the money to buy their building, we pulled some select quotes from artistic director Clyde Simon about their upcoming NEOMFA Playwrights Festival. Learn the truth about immigrants and refugees from people who work with them at a panel discussion in Asiatown. Make your own sampler with burlesque queens Le Femme Mystique at the Beachland, Ron Shalom at Akron’s Hive Mind, 13-year old piano prodigy Gavin George at CMA, or guitar hero Albert Lee at TKS.

Have a humorous Battle of the Sexes, Turn the Page at AAM, join a tuneful Weird Romance, or just Walkabout Tremont. We’re hoping once you have a sample, you’ll come back for more. –Thomas Mulready

Hi-Fructose is a different kind of art magazine. In it, what might normally be considered “fine art” jostles for space with art inspired by graffiti, tattoos, comics and other pop culture images. Turn the Page, opening at the Akron Art Museum, celebrates the magazine’s 10th anniversary, showing more than 50 artists it’s featured over the years.

John Benson talks to Akron Art Museum assistant curator Elizabeth Carney to find out why the Akron Art Museum provided a venue for this touring show. Fri 2/10.

The genre-defying Cleveland band, Mourning [A] BLKstar, invited CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska to their studio for an exclusive look and listen at their music. The band described their process of interpreting words and concepts through live musicians and sampling. They discussed the value of sampling, especially its power to connect to past generations and how sample-based music is at the heart of black music.

Grab a peek as we sit in on their practice, with a stunning performance of their track “Solange Say.” You can hear more of them live at Now That’s Class on Fri 2/10, along with local acts Muamin Collective and Toma Doe.

The uproar late last year over the news that Cuyahoga Arts & Culture was in essence taking back the small piece of funding set aside for individual artists may seem to have died down in the blitz of post-inauguration activism, but don’t worry – it’s all working together to make the artist community more aware of the need to keep an eye on public officials and tax money overseers.

Anyone with an interest in how that arts money is being spent is urged to attend the CAC board meeting this week at PlayhouseSquare’s Idea Center. Mon 2/13.

Tremont’s convergence-continuum theater has always focused on doing plays no one else was – brand new or new to the area, with a eye on being provocative and thought-provoking. That’s why working with young writers as part of its annual NEOMFA Playwrights Festival is such a natural fit.

c-c’s artistic director Clyde Simon talked to us about this year’s plays, one a modern version of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, the other featuring three separate but interrelated journeys through darkness.
