Hi-Fructose is a different kind of art magazine. In it, what might normally be considered “fine art” jostles for space with art inspired by graffiti, tattoos, comics and other pop culture images. Turn the Page, opening at the Akron Art Museum, celebrates the magazine’s 10th anniversary, showing more than 50 artists it’s featured over the years.

Now in its 10th inspirational year, Women’s Weekend at Ray’s Indoor Bike Park will feature World Champion and two-time Hall of Fame member Leigh Donovan and her stellar all-female coaching staff, in residence all weekend at Ray’s to help area women reach new heights with their skills and confidence.
Rental bikes, pads & helmets are available, and the park will be reserved for women only on Fri 2/10 from 8AM to 4PM. Women celebrity riders will be in the park all weekend long offering training sessions, tips and support through Sun 2/12. Ride like a girl!
The genre-defying Cleveland band, Mourning [A] BLKstar, invited CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska to their studio for an exclusive look and listen at their music. The band described their process of interpreting words and concepts through live musicians and sampling. They discussed the value of sampling, especially its power to connect to past generations and how sample-based music is at the heart of black music.

The uproar late last year over the news that Cuyahoga Arts & Culture was in essence taking back the small piece of funding set aside for individual artists may seem to have died down in the blitz of post-inauguration activism, but don’t worry – it’s all working together to make the artist community more aware of the need to keep an eye on public officials and tax money overseers.
Anyone with an interest in how that arts money is being spent is urged to attend the CAC board meeting this week at PlayhouseSquare’s Idea Center. Mon 2/13.
Tremont’s convergence-continuum theater has always focused on doing plays no one else was – brand new or new to the area, with a eye on being provocative and thought-provoking. That’s why working with young writers as part of its annual NEOMFA Playwrights Festival is such a natural fit.
c-c’s artistic director Clyde Simon talked to us about this year’s plays, one a modern version of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, the other featuring three separate but interrelated journeys through darkness. A road construction detour around four blocks of Detroit Avenue in Gordon Square has hit the restaurants and other businesses there hard. Kids can learn songwriting from a pro. Freelance journalist and musician Afi Scruggs will spend a morning at Lake Erie Ink guiding young aspiring tunesmiths in how to express their feelings and ideas in lyrics that can be set to music. Sat 2/11.
