New Look

It’s time to adopt a fresh perspective. We’ll help with a few suggestions below.

Look again at some of our coolest neighborhoods and artists. Talented veteran Tracy Marie is back with a new album produced by Akron bluegrass musician David Mayfield. Artist Scott Pickering leads us on a tour of Slavic Village’s new streetscape. Our next generation of filmmakers screen new work at Negative Space.

It’s time for your friends to reconsider their opinion of our region’s wine, and you can start with the upcoming Ice Wine Festival in March. And maybe rethink winter itself at an outdoor fireside chat at the new Edgewater Beach House.

Taste our region’s chefs during Cleveland Restaurant Week, hear Kent’s Jessica Lea Mayfield and her latest sound, learn about owls native to NEO at Lake View Cemetery, and Walk All Over Waterloo at CAN Journal’s spring release party.

CoolCleveland’s biz columnist suggests we can forge a new path to honesty with our employees. And Mansfield suggests we need to discuss and teach our history of slavery and get real about the gun debate. We deserve a fresh approach. –Thomas Mulready

Just a few years ago, Slavic Village main artery Fleet Avenue was a dreary stretch of empty, crumbling storefronts. Then just two years ago, a streetscape project helped give its infrastructure a new look – and a local artist is transforming some of those buildings.

While many still sit empty, blank storefronts are being decorated with colorful, whimsical images, thanks to veteran artist/musician Scott Pickering. Writer/photographer Nicole Hennessy takes a stroll around Fleet with Pickering and shows and tells us what’s going on.

Cleveland musician Tracy Marie has been involved in a lot of different types of projects over the last decade and a half, including a Heart tribute band, and rock and blues ensembles, despite being hampered by congenital health issues.

She also has a large back catalogue of songs and she’s now putting her own material on the front burner with her new album Beautiful Mess, produced by Akron bluegrass musician David Mayfield, whom she gave free reign to shape the material. Now she’ll perform it live at the Music Box. Tue 3/6.

The wineries of NE Ohio’s Grand River Valley are pretty great any time of year. But right now, they’re celebrating a special treat that comes in small batches – ice wine, made from frozen grapes, picked at just the right time.

Five wineries in Lake and Ashtabula counties are hosting the Ice Wine Festival the first three Saturdays in March with special offerings. Our wine maven Claudia Taller provides some background on ice wine, and tells us where to go and what they have in store. Sat 3/3, Sat 3/10 & Sat 3/17.

Winter can be no joke in Cleveland, but for the hearty, wintertime is the perfect time to get outside.

Join the American Planning Association and Cleveland Metroparks for a unique outdoor panel discussion on winter activities next to the fireplace at the Edgewater Beach House on Thu 3/1 at 5:30pm. The fireside chat will feature director of Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative David Jurca and artist/educator Donald Black discussing what other cities are doing during the coldest months of the year. Warm up with chili, hot chocolate and a cash bar and, of course, dress for the weather.

Felise Bagley and Damien Highfield have been stars of northeast Ohio’s GroundWorks DanceTheatre for so long, it’s hard to imagine the company without them. But that will be the reality following two farewell performances, one Sat 3/3 at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall and one Sat 4/7 at Ohio’s City’s Breen Center.

The duo talks at length with CoolCleveland dance writers Elsa Johnson and Victor Lucas about their journey with GroundWorks, the pieces they’ll perform as their finale, their regrets and their future plans.

Talk all you want about how “money doesn’t matter” but it does. And if a company acts cagey about the salary it’s prepared to pay for a job, or has internal inconsistencies in how it pays for different job levels, it’s going to lose out on talented employees.

CoolCleveland’s business columnist Alex Sukhoy suggests that publishing salary ranges and not penalizing employees financially for promotions is just common sense.
