Aaron Hynds Stretches the Limit of the Tuba at Kent State University

Sat 4/7 @ 7:30PM

Hear what the one of the giants of the musical instrument world can do beyond its expected role in a marching band when New Music at Kent State’s Vanguard Artist Series presents tuba player Aaron Hynds in a program called “The Electroacoustic Tuba.”

The Nebraska-based Hynds is a musician/composer/audio engineer (and currently a doctoral candidate at Bowling Green State University), who avidly seeks out and commissions new work for his instrument. He explores the connections between the analog and the digital, combining the tuba with electronics in many of his works and pieces he performs.

His performance at KSU’s Ludwig Recital Hall will include “Tubanitis” by Kaja Bjørntvedt, “Caverns” by KSU’s Frank Wiley, “abscess” by Kurt Isaacson, “Dyadic Affinities” by Asha Srinivasan, “Left Out” by Laura Schwartz, “Breath and Sounds” by Beatrice Witkin and Hynds’ own “Sin-eater.”

The performance is free and open to all. He will conduct a workshop on his techniques for brass students from 5:15-6:15, with a presentation following that is open to the public. Ludwig Recital Hall is in the Center for the Performing Arts.
