Localized

The more we digitize, the more important local gets. We started promoting local holiday shopping over 10 years ago with what we called our Holiday Buying Guide to stimulate our local economy and encourage local entrepreneurs, artists and artisans. Now there’s over 1200 local shops, restaurants, boutiques, hip hangouts, coffee & tea shops, microbreweries & distilleries, museums and more using the ShopLOCAL, SUSTENANCE and CoolNEIGHBORHOODS listings on our website and mobile apps. Owners can even request free swag to promote shopping local and shopping cool.

Local philanthropy is in the spotlight in our feature by Claudia Taller. Cruel Winter Fest is CLE Hip-Hop artist Dirty Jones’ way of giving back. The Nutcracker has been localized, and Lake Erie Ink shows you how to personalize your holiday gifts. Stephan Haluska visits local turntablist p. stoops in his studio as he builds his tracks. VegFest hosts a fundraiser, Neil Zaza plays “One Silent Night,” and Matt Fish announces his next grilled cheeserie will open in Dayton. To us, Melt will always be a local restaurant.

Enjoy spoken word on Larchmere, BrewHaHa in Tremont, the Messiah at Trinity Cathedral, a winter cycling festival in Ohio City, a night of winter & noise at Hive Mind, a pajamarama movie party at GLSC, and a Heavy Metal Flea Market at Now That’s Class. And even though the CAC board has announced a pause in controversial changes to our region’s cigarette tax-funded individual artist grants, be there when they meet Monday to show you’re listening. And be there in January for our Bowie shows at BOP STOP. It won’t get any more local than that. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland was once known for philanthropy. You see echoes of it around town in names such as Blossom, Severance, Rockefeller and Gund. But what about the younger generation? Are they stepping up, and if so, in what way?

That’s the topic of “Generation Give,” a forum taking place at PlayhouseSquare’s Idea Center exploring the history of philanthropy in Cleveland and featuring some of today’s young leaders explaining where they are focusing their money and time. Claudia Taller tells us more. Mon 12/12.

Rapper/artist manager Wallace Settles aka Dirty Jones decided that hip-hop acts weren’t getting enough slots on local music festivals. So he launched his own Cruel Winter Fest, now in its third year. He’s put together 15 diverse local emcees and DJs to perform at the Grog Shop, focusing on younger artists who have just made a move or started to get some buzz.

Settles chatted with our reporter John Benson to share some of the high points of his festival as well as his thoughts about the state of the hip-hip scene in Cleveland. Fri 10/9.

If you own a local shop, restaurant or attraction that’s listed in one of our free CoolNEIGHBORHOODS, either in the ShopLOCAL or SUSTENANCE areas, you’re eligible to receive a free window cling, a sticker, and as many Favicards as you can hand out to your customers.

On the other hand, maybe your local business should be included on CoolCleveland, in which case, feel free to get in touch. We’d love to tell the world about you during the all-important upcoming holiday season! Details.

Last year, Neos Dance Theatre presented A 1940’s Nutcracker, localized to the small town of Mansfield featuring places from the town’s past and vintage costuming to strike a nostalgic chord even with those who never set foot there.

This year, they’re using projection mapping technology to take the production to the next level with wraparound visuals on multiple screens. Our dance writers Elsa Johnson & Victor Lucas talk to company director Bobby Wesner to learn how they’re making Christmas Past come alive. Sat 12/10, Fri 12/16 & Sat 12/17.

Tickets are selling briskly.

Part 1 begins with his half-dozen failed attempts at stardom in the 1960’s to worldwide “Fame” with Young Americans, during which Bowie bottoms out, as the excesses of mid-1970’s stardom threaten to engulf him. Part 2 covers his Mid- to Late-Period, from “The Berlin Trilogy” through Let’s Dance to his mysteriously choreographed death and his final recordings. Tickets are now on sale. Last year’s shows sold out four times.

Since it came out last month that Cuyahoga Arts and Culture decided without much, if any, input from the artist community that it would repurpose the small amount of the arts tax money allocated for individual artists, there’s been a lot of conversation among artists, ranging from baffled to outraged.

The CAC board now says it won’t vote on these changes, as planned, at its meeting Mon 12/12 at the Idea Center. Those who planned to attend should do so to make their concern evident and keep track of what changes might be made going forward.
