Telling Stories

It’s how we know we’re alive. We tell each other our secrets, our discoveries, our wishes, our nightmares. It’s why we need our artists. To find our stories wherever they are.

Walkabout in Tremont with classic cars, street entertainers and art. In Coventry Village, discover the free Pekar Park Comic Festival & Storytelling Evening. Up in Akron, learn to prepare quick meals with fresh ingredients at Hattie’s Food Hub. Down at the Q, hear the AP Music Awards. In Uptown at MOCA, see Liz Maugans’ Artist Trust project. Over in Ohio City, promote health & wellness with kids’ games. Down at the Music Box in the Flats, catch the return of Alexis Antes from Odd Girl Out. The stories are everywhere this week.

Outside at the Rock Hall, preview new original music and glam classics with Vanity Crash. Inside at Mahall’s in Lakewood, support Lady Parts Justice on their Vagical Mystery Tour. At Maple Lanes, get a dose of percussion, electronics and performance art. Up in Cleveland Hts, witness Dobama’s dual Israeli plays. Over in Painsville, participate in the largest free music fest in Ohio. And you through we were just telling stories. –Thomas Mulready

The late Harvey Pekar (1939-2010) was the chronicler of Cleveland’s decline years. The stories he told in his comic strips and graphic novels about ordinary people doing mundane things were usually pessimistic, but also affectionate.

Named after a fungus that grows in barnyards, Pilobolus is renowned worldwide for its witty and gravity-defying works that challenge the notions of what modern dance can look like. Using the human body and movement, the company creates awe inducing shapes that push the imagination.

The National Day of Dance will kick off with a creative performance of audience favorite, Shadowland on Sat 7/29 at the State Theatre in Playhouse Square, which will take audience members on a dream-like adventure. Tickets start at $25. Visit DANCECleveland.org or call 216-241-6000.

Actor Roy Horovitz is well-known in his native Israel for his outstanding work in drama, comedy and children’s theater. He’s also made numerous appearances in the U.S. in works with Jewish themes.

Liz Maugans, who co-founded Zygote Press and serves as its executive director, has been escalating her role as an advocate for local artists and the art community. Her Artist’s Trust project, on view at MOCA, features more than 300 self-portraits submitted by artists who live and work in Cuyahoga County.

Join Maugans and local artists for a Summer Mixer at MOCA to celebrate the visual art community. Thu 7/13.
