The New Age

The sun sets, and everything’s different.

Negative Space becomes your favorite place. Akron suddenly has Pride like never before. The Towpath Trail inches towards completion.

You start to speak out for women’s reproductive rights. Pagans and New Agers invade Bedford. There’s free opera on Public Square. Wade Oval gets funky. Artstronauts land in Waterloo. CMA gets Kinky. Convergence becomes absurd.

It might all be new, but this is your time, and your town. Don’t miss it. –Thomas Mulready

Last September, four friends sat around an Akron bar, mulling over why towns as small as Mansfield had Pride celebrations but Akron did not. A few phone calls later, it was on its way to having one. And they found that Akron was eager to get behind it, from longtime advocates for the LGBT community all the way to City Hall.

So on Saturday, Mayor Dan Horrigan will lead the March for Equality from Highland Square into Hardesty Park where thousands are expected to attend an all-day party with supporters from all areas of the community – government, business, nonprofits, healthcare organizations and more – while the Weather Girls’ Martha Wash headlines on one of the two stages. It’s brand new, but it’s going to be big. Sat 8/26.

For five years, Negative Space in AsiaTown has provided a performance and exhibition space where diverse artists can come together, hang out, share, experiment and get their work in front of an audience. It’s hosted open mics for poets, musicians and comedians, and displayed a wide range of photography, painting, sculpture, film and mixed-media work.

Originally a small studio & gallery run by new Cleveland resident Gadi Zamir (he came here from Israel in 1999), it became a nonprofit, and grew from 800 square feet to 3,000 – but that still wasn’t enough for everything he wanted to do there. So he’s been renovating a 4,000 sf space in Asia Town Center and this week, it will celebrate its grand opening. John Benson talks to Zamir about Negative Space’s journey and his plans for its future. Sat 8/26.

While Matt Kiroff, director of The Pith and Root of Sleep was a student at CIM, Forest Hill Park in Cleveland Heights became a sacred space for him and his peers, an in-between place, a place between the natural and artificial worlds.

CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska met Matt Kiroff and Jenna Barvitski at Forest Hill Park to discuss their large cast of local and regional musicians, dancers, performance and visual artists collaborating on their latest site-specific multimedia work, Fugue State: Modern Music, Art, and Dance in the Woods.

The Towpath Trail is one more example of how northeast Ohio is reinventing its industrial past. Once part of the working Ohio & Erie Canal, it’s now being slowly transformed into a recreational trail for hikers, bikers, walkers and nature lovers.

The project has lots of parts and pieces, and some contend the original plan for a long trail connected to the lake is moving at a snail’s pace. But the pieces ARE coming together. The Towpath Stomp, taking place behind Sokolowski’s in Tremont, offers the chance to explore a new section, while listening to live music, enjoying some food and drink, and basking in a gorgeous view of the Cleveland skyline. CoolCleveland talked to senior project manager Jessica French to get the latest update on the state of the trail, why it’s taking so long, and what we can look forward to. Sat 8/26.

When the man occupying the White House attempts to equate Nazis with those who oppose them he is treading on dangerously thin ice. For him to rhetorically ask if there would soon be demands that the statues of Washington and Jefferson be taken down next ignores one glaring fact of history: The Founding Fathers, for all of their shortcomings in regards to being slaveholders, were never traitors….

* Whatever You Do, Please Don’t Stop As much as it might rankle me and cause my blood to boil when I see losers, bigots and plain ‘ol nut cases marching through the streets of American cities carrying Nazi flags, I want them to continue to do so, and my position has nothing to do with protecting their First Amendment rights…
