A Healing

I don’t know about you. But we’re fed up. A well-regulated militia sounds like our police and military, not an AR-15 in every backpack. Mansfield suggests a sleeping giant has been awakened. This week, we recommend action and healing.

You’d do well to start with the family-friendly all-day Big Love Festival that Zach Friedhof founded a few years back to encourage “building and cultivating community and transformation.” Brite Winter has blossomed into a massive cold weather event with 40 bands, art, Zumba, ice carving, food trucks and enough goodwill to carry you through ’til spring. Cullen and Emmett O’Connor started Archie and the Bunkers in CLE as pre-teens with a hi-fi organ punk vibe, and their new single will save your soul.

Soothe your spirit with Family Game Night at CMA, Musical Rainbow at Severance, and MacArthur genius award winner and acclaimed jazz violinist Regina Carter at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel. Revive your resolve with the Lake Erie Folk Fest at Shore Cultural Center, the Cleveland Cello Society at The Music Settlement, and Instagram photojournalist Ruddy Roye at Cleveland Print Room. Support the best of our community, or the worst will take over. –Thomas Mulready

Anyone who knows Akron musician Zach Friedhof knows how dedicated he is to working toward peace – both inner and outer. That’s why he founded the Big Love Festival, now in the fifth year. ” It’s very much about building and cultivating community and transformation,” he says.

The all-day festival at the Summit Artspace is a family-friendly feast of activities intended to address sustainability, foster mindfulness and create connections. There are live music performances by the likes of Carlos Jones and Zach and his band the Bright Lights, healing workshops, yoga, Reiki, a Kids’ Space and more – and it’s all free. Fri 2/24.

Brothers Cullen and Emmett O’Connor started their garage/punk band Archie & the Bunker when they were pre-teens. The drums/organ duo is calls its music “hi-fi organ punk” and it’s been attracting attention in area clubs – and beyond.

Now, still in their teens, they’ve released several singles, two EPs and an album, with another on the way in April, and they’ve toured Europe. With a new single just out, the Archies are playing the Beachland Tavern where they’ll preview a few of the new songs.

Back in 2010, it seemed sort of crazy when a small hardy group of people booked some bands to play a mini-festival outdoors alongside the river in the Flats – in February.

That small event, dubbed Brite Winter, has burgeoned in a monstrous event that attracts thousands to its multiple outdoor stages, tents and firepits (along with indoor stages for the less cold-tolerant). It’s taking place this weekend in the Nautica area of the Flats West Bank with some 40 bands, art, Zumba, ice carving, good tricks and more. And it looks like the weather’s going to be warm! Sat 2/24.
