NEOSonicFest’s 5th Year Hosts New Music Concerts All Over Town

Thu 4/5-Wed 4/11

The NEOSonicFest, a series of concert hosted by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony focusing on newly written compositions, is back for the fifth year at various venues around town over the next week and a half.

It kicks off at MOCA Cleveland Thu 4/5 @ 7:30pm with a performance of selections from Éliane Radigue’s expansive, ongoing work Occam Ocean by clarinetist Carol Robinson and trumpet player Nate Wooley. It will take place inside the INDUCTION exhibition, which was co-created by Radigue with Tauba Auerbach. Tickets are $15; $10 for MOCA members and students with ID.

On Fri 4/6 @ 8pm, Cleveland’s No Exit New Music, which has a mission to commission new works, will perform a free program at Heights Arts. It will include pieces by Leo Ornstein, Ty Emerson, Per Norgard, James Praznik, Andrew Rindfleisch and Tristan Murail, with special appearances by trumpet players Scott McKee and the Cleveland Orchestra’s Jack Sutte.

The Cleveland Institute of Music’s New Music Ensemble program will perform at the BOP STOP on Sat 4/7 @ 7pm. Their program will feature music by David Rakowski, Stephen Hartke, and Keith Fitch, who leads the ensemble and is head of CIM’s composition department.

On Sun 4/8 @ 7pm, seven-minute compositions by members of the Cleveland Composers Guild will be performed at Judson Manor.

The action moves to the Happy Dog in Gordon Square, a rock club that presents a lot of off-the-wall programming, on Tue 4/10 @ 9pm. There Cleveland keyboard player Rob Kovacs, who also performs as a singer/songwriter and the leader of indie pop trio Return of Simple, will perform covers of classic NES (Nintendo) games ranging from the hits to the obscure. He’ll recreate musical themes on the piano originally produced by a soundchip inside the game.

To wrap it up, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony will perform music by the finalists in its Young and Emerging Composers program on Wed 4/11 @ 7pm at Baldwin Wallace University’s Gamble Auditorium. Music on the program was written by young composers from Baldwin Wallace, CIM, Bowling Green State University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, Oberlin College, Tri-C and the University of Akron.

All concerts are free except the MOCA Cleveland event. Register for tickets at neosonicfest.org.
