The fifth season of Ohio City Stages, the month-long Wednesday evening series of free global music concerts in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood, wraps up this week, giving you one last chance to dance in the street to music from around the world.
Mokoomba, out of Zimbabwe, are the perfect conclusion to the season. The high-energy six-piece ensemble, who call their music “Afro-fusion,” start with their native sounds, already a melting pot, and blend in music from America (funk), Jamaica (ska), Trinidad and Tobago (soca), and France by way of the Congo (soukous). Although relatively young both as a group — they started to get international attention only four or five years ago — and personally (they’re in their late 2s), they’ve performed in more than 50 countries.
For the concert, West 29th is closed at Church where the stage is set up in the street. You can bring a chair and sit in the street or a blanket to sit on the Transformer Station lawn. (The Transformer Station stays open until 9 if you’d like to check out their current show, THEM!, featuring the work of six musician/photographers).
There will be food trucks and beer available for purchase. The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Studio Go van will be on hand to provide hands-on art-making opportunities for all ages.
