Singer/songwriter and rock musician “Stew” (Mark Stewart), who led the band The Negro Problem in the 1990s, morphed into a playwright in the 2000s. In 2006, he debuted his first play Passing Strange, with music by Heidi Rodewald, a rock musical he says is partly based on his own experiences as a musician.
In it, the lead character, a middle-class African-American musician named “Youth,” goes on a personal, cultural and musical journey to uncover and understand his own influences and learn what shaped the course of his life.
Karamu is staging the play in its Arena Theatre, directed by Nathan Lilly with music direction by Ed Ridley Jr. Darius Stubbs plays the role of author Stew while Justin Woody is Youth.
